November 19-23, 2013 -- ACSUS Conference
The ACSUS (Association for Canadian Studies in the United States) will have its next biennial international conference in downtown Tampa at the Marriott Waterfront from Nov 19-23, 2013. It is co-sponsored by USF World, Research One, and the Department of World Languages (Dr. Brulotte acted as the local liaison between USF and ACSUS). The program includes over 100 panels and roundtables across more than a dozen disciplines, and features guest speakers such as Canada's Ambassador to the US, and a reading by Quebec authors (including our own Dr. Brülotte). USF students may attend all panel presentations free of charge by showing a valid USF ID (excluding special events and dinner events) and USF Faculty and Staff may do so at the student rate of $50. October 16, 2013 -- At the conclusion of the Maria Zambrano Conference, Cuban Artist Baruj Salinas presented Dr. Madeline Camara and Dr. Stephan K. Schindler with a gift for the “Aula Maria Zambrano.” The painting is part of the cycle “Claros del Bosque” and will be placed in the Aula.
October 14, 2013 -- Dr. Pablo Brescia was awarded the Status of Latinos (SOL) Faculty Award at this year's Hispanic Heritage Kickoff Celebration. To read more about this, please click here.
Fall 2013 -- Dr. Pablo Brescia and Dr. Madeline Camara were both mentioned in this Fall's ISLAC Newsletter. Dr. Brescia was awarded the SOL Faculty Award at this year's Hispanic Heritage Celebration and Dr. Camara was recognized at the 10th Annual Diversity Summit in April.

July 3, 2013 -- The MA program in Applied Linguistics in the World Languages department at USF is now accepting applications for the newly-established Gratitude Scholarship in Applied Linguistics.
The Gratitude Scholarship in Applied Linguistics is a graduate scholarship designed to assist a student achieve their educational goals.
Recipients must have and maintain a 3.0 GPA as calculated by USF and must demonstrate financial need as documented by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Strong consideration will be given to students who are Florida residents, and have a strong background of volunteer service. Eligibility criteria include the following:
- You must be a current or new student in the MA-Applied Linguistics program at USF.
- You must be enrolled as a full-time student (9 credit hours).
- You must have already submitted a FAFSA for the current academic year
To apply, please submit an essay in which you describe any past volunteer experiences you have participated in, and describe what community service activities you plan to be involved in during your studies at USF. Please also discuss your future plans for "giving back" to the field of Applied Linguistics after graduation.
Application deadline is July 22, 2013. To apply, please submit your essay, and supporting documents showing your Fall course schedule and FAFSA eligibility to Dr. Camilla Vasquez (email@example.com). Applications will be reviewed by a departmental committee and awardees will be notified in the first two weeks of August.

On April 10, 2013, Dr. Christine Probes will become a “Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques,” one of the highest awards the French Government bestows on cultural and educational figures. The Consul General of France in Miami, Gaël de Maisonneuve will present this prestigious award to Dr. Probes in a ceremony that takes place in the auditorium of the Patel Center for Global Solutions from 4pm to 5pm. March 19, 2013 -- Sixth Annual Spanish Fair
The Hispanic/Latino Section of the Department of World Languages at the University of South Florida invites you to our Sixth Annual Spanish Fair, on March 19th, 2013, at the TECO Room, USF College of Education, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Fair showcases our graduate and undergraduate Spanish programs to the USF and Tampa communities and is an opportunity for exchanges and collaborations. Come and join us in a day of cultural awareness, music, videos and fun activities! The ongoing event will have presentations about the diverse regions and cultures of the Hispanic world, info booths, videos, music, and food. Admission is free.
