Saturday, November 19, 2011 -- World-renowned German director Werner Herzog showed his latest documentary Into the Abyss and discussed his work with USF students and faculty, as well as the public. The more than 400 audience members gave the director a standing ovation. The German Embassy also hosted a reception for the filmmaker attended by several prominent area politicians, such as State Attorney Pam Bondi, foreign dignitaries, and members of the USF and Tampa Bay business community. This event was sponsored by the German Embassy, the USF Humanities Institute, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Departments of Communication, English, History, Humanities and Cultural Studies, Philosophy and World Languages.

Monday, October 24, 2011--Imagining the Unimaginable: The Holocaust in Culture--The USF chapter of Phi Sigma Iota will host its 2011 fall meeting featuring Dr. Stephen K. Schindler, professor of German and Chair of the Department of World Languages. August 22, 2011 / Transitions -- World Languages welcomes Dr. Stephan Schindler as new department chair. Dr. Schindler comes to USF from a position as professor and chair in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Washington University in St. Louis. Victor Peppard, who has served as chair of World Languages for the past 10 years will spend the year on sabbatical leave. World Languages looks forward to Dr. Peppard's continued participation in the department as professor of Russian upon his return.

June 24, 2011 -- USF Spanish and Latin American Film Series, is showing Buñuel y la mesa del rey Salomón, a film by the acclaimed director Carlos Saura, in CIS 1048, 6-8 p.m. This highly unusual film offers a surreal rendering of a fictional encounter between the Spanish film director Luis Buñuel, the poet Federico García Lorca, and the surrealist painter Salvador Dalí. April 8, 2011 -- Theory Talk (Series I)
In memory of Dr. Warren Hampton, World Languages invites you to the first of a series of talks designed to provide our graduate students and others from the Humanities discipline, with a deeper understanding of contemporary theoretical approaches to Literature, Art and Culture in general.
DATE: Friday: April 8 Hour: 2pm - 4pm Room: 459 (4th floor, Cooper Hall). The program will feature four speakers in the first hour presenting on the following topics:
Dr. Victor Peppard. Chair WLE. Professor, Russian: “Key concepts of Mikhail Bakhtin.”
Dr. Harry Vanden. Professor, Political Sciences “Marxists Thinkers: Gramsci and Mariategui.”
Dr. Madeline Cámara. Professor, Latin American Literature: “Remembering Foucault.”
Dr. Christine Probes. Professor, French: “Eclectic Approaches to a World of Words and Images.”
Q & A from the students will follow after a short break with refreshments provided by our host: The Literary Theory Class - SPW 5934. The session will be conducted in English.
